Our first formal schools were opened in 1918, and AKESK currently operates 11 schools in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu and Eldoret.

Theatre Technician

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY

Reporting to the Manager – The Aga Khan Medical Centre , Kisii, the Theatre Technician will be responsible for  ensuring sterilization of surgical equipment as per the laid down procedure and a safe surgical environment for patients and staff.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Clean, prepare and sterilize surgical instruments as per laid down procedure.
  • Order and maintain all necessary supplies in the theatre.
  • Ensure the OR is sterile and completely functional.
  • Conduct an inventory of instruments before and after each procedure.
  • Assist with patient monitoring during the length of the procedure.
  •  Prepare the theatre and equipment before and after surgery.
  • Assist in bringing in patients into the operating room.
  • Report any defective equipment or instrument for repair or/and replacement.
  • Ensure a clean theatre between surgeries and perform terminal cleaning at the end of the day.
  • Assist patient positioning during surgical procedures.

The requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education
  • A Diploma in Theatre Technology from a recognized institution
  • Three (3) years of experience in Theatre as a Theatre Technician.
  • Licensed by Kenya Health Professional Oversight Authority
  • Registered by Peri-operative Technician and Technologist Association of Kenya
  • BLS qualifications from a relevant body.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication & customer care skills
  • Computer literate.

Manager – Nursing Practice & Education

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY

Reporting to the Director Quality Services Kenya & Head of Nursing Practice, Kisumu, the Manager – Nursing Practice & Education will be responsible for delivery of safe and quality patient care through evidence based clinical practice and nurses’ professional growth and development.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs clinical practice assessment and support of Core Measures evidence-based standards documentation through concurrent audit, interaction with nursing staff, and concept of data utilizing appropriate applications.
  • Organize orientation and basic credentialing certification of nursing staff.
  • Clinical capacity building of the nursing staff through formal/informal educational program, clinical mentorship, and international collaboration
  • Develop and maintain effective networks both internal and external to improve nursing practice.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements for nurses and maintain a database of nursing licensure, mandatory certification, and job descriptions.
  • Manage and Monitor Nursing Division affiliation with professional bodies, health facilities and training schools.
  • Evaluate implementation and effectiveness of training programs on an ongoing basis and communicates variance to nurse leaders.
  • Develop Nursing Care standards, policies and procedures and designs relevant tools for use at unit levels.
  • Manage clinical placement for local and international nursing students and nurses seeking clinical placements.
  • Maintain a database of division wide key performance indicators and communicates variances in a timely manner.
  • Participate in identification of continuous quality improvement projects (CQI)
  • Actively participates in nursing quality audits and follow up audit recommendations with corrective and preventive actions.
  • Conducts spot-checks to assess compliance with established policies, guidelines, and protocols.
  • Work closely with nurses to conduct regular skill checks to identify their training/learning needs and designs individual training programs.
  • Design a plan for continuing unit based learning and works with the nurse in-charge to ensure participation of all nurses.
  • Use clinical incidences as learning opportunities for nurses and with them plans corrective and preventive actions.

The requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
  • Master’s degree in any healthcare related field from a recognized Institution will be an added advantage.
  • At least seven (7) years of experience in an acute care setting with there (3) years’ experience in a supervisory role in healthcare industry.
  • Registered Nurse with valid practicing license with the Nursing Council of Kenya.
  • Good clinical experience, excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication, administrative & customer care skills.
  • Certification in ACLS & BLS.

Manager – Quality & Patient Safety

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY

Reporting to the Director Quality Services Kenya & Head of Nursing Practice, Kisumu, the Manager – Quality & Patient Safety will be responsible for setting the strategic direction, coordinating and supervising all functions and activities that will enhance patient safety and clinical quality to attain and maintain quality accreditation.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the implementation of quality and patient safety programs in compliance with the hospital quality program.
  • Provide a platform to actively communicate quality improvement and patient safety activities and knowledge throughout AKHK.
  • Provide overall guidance necessary to ensure that clinical services are provided in accordance with established standards.
  • Collaborate with all the relevant stakeholders, both internal and external, to ensure that AKHK meets all legal and regulatory requirements relevant to quality and patient safety along with promoting ethical and legal practices.
  • Provide support in development and review of Hospital wide policies to ensure compliance to quality standards of accreditation bodies.
  • Guide the interpretation and implementation of developed policies and procedures in the context of the quality and patient safety framework.
  • Evaluate and regulate policies according to international standards and best practices.
  • Responsible for implementation of AKHK Quality and Patient Safety Program and ensure that quality and patient safety audits are planned and conducted as per schedule in the light of AKHK Policies and JCIA standards.
  • Directs and supports the collection, measurement and presentation of data required for monitoring and improving quality and patient safety.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance for Institutional Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) related to Quality and Patient safety.
  • Review institutional accreditation and regulatory agencies survey/quality audit findings and support development of action plans to address non-compliance.
  • Participate in internal and external quality audits and share audit observations with leadership and the departments.
  • Leads programs the Hospital in conducting Root Cause Analysis for sentinel and adverse events.
  • Act as resource person for all managers particularly the service line business and nurse managers to discuss and work on the identified non-compliances during clinical audits.
  • Constantly be involved in the training and communication of quality and patient safety issues and standards /best practice in the institution .

The requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • University Degree level preferably with master’s degree in Medical/Clinical filed .
  • Health Management background would be an added advantage.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in direct clinical practice requirements
  • Have a strong experience and knowledge of clinical monitoring functions with knowledge of clinical research.
  • Knowledge of Joint Commission International Patient Safety Standards
  • Excellent data analytics and presentation skills
  • Knowledge in quality improvement processes and methodologies.
  • Excellent communication, presentation and communication skills.
  • Ability to work with multidisciplinary teams.

CSSD Technician

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY

Reporting to the Head Nurse – Theatre, the CSSD Technician will be responsible for control of all parts of the sterilization process: This includes decontamination, prep, pack, and sterilization of equipment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Document all sterilization of equipment.
  • Ensure sterile storage including remediation of equipment failures and hazards.
  • Monitor biological and chemical wash solution to ensure quality and consistency for decontamination of instruments and medical equipment.
  • Sort mismatched sets of instruments, trays, and medical equipment and makes them available to sterile processing customers in a timely manner.
  • Restock, labels, and maintain inventory, submits requisitions, collects, and distributes instruments, trays, and facility medical equipment.
  • Perform environmental maintenance duties and assists in maintaining inventory levels in sterile processing, the operating room and in equipment storage areas.
  • Verify that equipment functions properly, requisitions for equipment maintenance, repair, or replacement, and remove defective equipment.
  • Maintain a clean work area.
  • Assist with maintaining established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality improvement, safety, and environmental and infection control standards.
  • Maintain consistency and continuous workflow between the OR and CSSD while practicing excellent customer service.
  • Operate and maintain sterile reliance machine; keep records of loads completed, items of loads and maintenance procedures performed.
  • Operate and maintain decontamination equipment.
  • Decontaminate, reprocess, and maintain flexible endoscopes and bronchoscopes.
  • Monitor surgery schedules daily, identifying general, specific, and potential needs for all cases.
  • Operate and maintain steam autoclaves, keeping records of loads completed, items in loads, and maintenance procedures performed.
  • Maintain strong working/collaborative relationships with other departments to ensure flow and continuity of services.
  • Participate in-service presentations, including but not limited to infection control, patient safety, quality improvement standards.

The requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education
  • A Certificate in CSSD Technician.
  • A Diploma in CSSD Technician will be an added advantage.
  • At least 2 years’ experience in health care related field, or same role in a health care facility is preferred.
  • Licensed by Kenya Health Professional Oversight Authority
  • Registered by Peri-operative Technician and Technologist Association of Kenya
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication & customer care skills
