TSC announces that over 36,000 teachers will receive their promotion letters
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced that over 36,000 teachers who applied for advancements in the previous year will receive their promotion letters within the current week. This comes after a prolonged period of stagnation in work groups for teachers across elementary, secondary, and teacher training institutions. TSC CEO Nancy Macharia has explained the delay in promotions, highlighting the extensive task of processing the large number of teachers on the shortlist.
Macharia also disclosed plans for the recruitment of an additional 20,000 teachers in the upcoming financial year, with the commission advertising 6,000 more positions within the current fiscal year. The 46,000 intern teachers currently under contract will transition to permanent and pensionable terms upon completing two years of service, while another 20,000 teachers will be recruited on contract this year.
Macharia discussed proposed amendments to the TSC Amendment Bill (2024), emphasizing ongoing consultations with stakeholders before presenting the Bill to Parliament. KUPPET Secretary General Akello Misori underscored the importance of progressive promotions, while KNUT SG Collins Oyuu stressed the significance of compensating promoted teachers for arrears accrued since their qualification for promotion.
